TJPA Commends Historic Award of $2.35 Billion in ARRA Funding for California
Funding will Help Support High-Speed Rail Line Connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles
The Transbay Joint Powers Authority is excited to announce today that it applauds President Obama, Secretary LaHood and the Federal Railroad Administration's decision to award California $2.35 billion in ARRA High-Speed Rail funding.
“The President is making good on his promise to create thousands of jobs by investing in our nation’s infrastructure,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “With today’s commitment to California, we can begin rebuilding our state’s economy as we build a model High-Speed Rail system for the nation. We will continue to work with the Administration, our Congressional leaders in Washington and the Governor to ensure the Transbay Project moves ahead this year, creating 48,000 jobs in the first phase of construction.”
This latest award of funding comes on the heels of the United States Department of Transportation's (USDOT) loan of $171 million dollars to the Transbay Project and is a strong endorsement of California’s vision of High-Speed Rail in the State and at the Transbay Transit Center.
"With this federal funding award, and the TIFIA loan received earlier this week, San Francisco’s Transbay Transit Center will be one of the first projects in the country putting these stimulus funds to work, improving California’s economy through investments in its future,” said Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr., Chairman, TJPA Board of Directors.
The project is currently planning for the demolition of the existing terminal, which will make way for the construction of the new Transbay Transit Center. Demolition of the current terminal and bus ramps could begin as early as this spring. The new Transit Center is expected to open in 2015.
“We would very much like to thank the many people who supported us through this process, including Speaker Pelosi, Senators Feinstein and Boxer, Governor Schwarzenegger, Mayor Newsom, and the entire Bay Area body of legislators at the local, State and Federal level,” said Maria-Ayerdi-Kaplan, Executive Director of the TJPA. “We will continue to need their support to ensure that the vision for a Northern California High-Speed Rail hub can be achieved in downtown San Francisco.”
